US and Iran have had a troubled relationship over the past 53 years. In 1953 the CIA overthrew Mohammed Mossadegh over his nationalization of oil. The Shah, placed in power through the US, brutally quashed dissent for 25 years. The US also equipped Saddam Hussein in his war of aggression against Iran in the 1980’s, and in 2002 President Bush labeled Iran a part of the “axis of evil.”
