Last Friday, the Israeli government announced a decision to outlaw and criminalize six Palestinian human rights organizations - including DCIP which anchors this coordination space. In solidarity with our Palestinian partners, several groups have drafted a letter to Secretary Blinken asking that the administration immediately and unequivocally condemn the decision. As is mentioned in the letter, "A threat against the Palestinian human rights movement is a threat against movements for social justice everywhere, and in order to protect human rights and human rights defenders, all states must be held accountable for taking such manifestly unjust actions."

We hope that all of your organizations will join this letter by COB, Thursday, October 28. This is a tight turnaround, but we have an important opportunity to pressure the Biden administration while it is hosting the Israeli delegation this week and weighing its response.

This alarming assault on Palestinian human rights organizations could lead to devastating consequences including mass arrests of human rights advocates under false pretenses, freezing of the organizations’ assets, and forcing the groups to shut down, preventing their critical work from happening. Smearing the promotion and defense of human rights as "terrorist" activity is a dangerous, well-worn tactic of authoritarian regimes and a shameful political maneuver to undermine the vital work of these organizations. In a joint statement, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International called the move “appalling and unjust” and “an alarming escalation that threatens to shut down the work of Palestine’s most prominent civil society organizations”.

Thank you for considering and for your continued commitment to the protection of human rights worldwide.
