13th Forward Advocacy Day

Details:

13th Forward Advocacy Day

May 20th 2025 | 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM ET

The 13th Amendment ended chattel slavery, but with an insidious exception: “as a punishment for a crime.” This loophole has allowed New York to build a prison system so dependent on human exploitation and degradation that it is akin to modern-day slavery. Through years-long investigative research and persistent records requests of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), the 13th Forward Coalition has compiled data that illuminates exactly how New York State relies on and profits from the forced and grossly underpaid labor of incarcerated individuals. On May 20th, join advocates, community members, legislators, and the 13th Forward Coalition for our Advocacy Day at the New York State Capitol as we advocate for ending slave labor in our state. Transportation, food, and lobbying training provided!
