  • Sunday, August 9, 2026
  • 11:00 AM  - 1:00 PM
  • Lions Park, 3439 Rosendale Road New York, 12309 (map)

This commemorative event will acknowledge the devastation from the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in August 1945, and will also be a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings and testing by the U.S. on the Marshall Islands beginning in 1946 and continuing till 1958.
Let us remember those who suffered, recognize the dangers of today's weapons, and strive for peace.

Sponsored by: Upper Hudson Peace Action & Women Against War
Music with: The Solidarity Singers, and Terri Roben, and event participants

Program

Part 1) We will gather at 11 am at Lions Park, Rosendale Rd., Niskayuna, probably near the old railroad station, not far from the entrance. The Mohawk River runs parallel to the park. It is a public park, so others will be present, and they are welcome to join in.
The program is intended to be concise, focused, and serious, with short remarks of history and updates, and brief poetry and music.

Part 2) A short silent peace walk on the bike path with our themed props and signs will follow the program. If there is a large group, we may need to break into sections, so that others using the bike path can get around us.
There is a turn off with a pretty view of the river where we will veer off to conclude the short walk. As a landmark, note the large town sign, and a bike rack that looks like a slinky.  Our current plan is to have some additional singing and visiting in this area, as folks choose.

Note, if there is excessive heat or other health issues, we will forgo the walk.

Anyone finding that a walk is not a match for them should feel welcome to attend and consider sitting with signs, etc. in the area where the program was held.

Further details:

  • We need to carefully follow the bike path rules, such as keeping to the right and not stopping and standing still on the bike path.
  • Consider bringing lawn chairs, water bottles, hats, sunblock, etc. We will hope to keep in the shade for the program, but the path has some sun.
  • Bring on-message respectful signs, etc.
  • Drums are welcome for the short peace walk and informal music.
  • If you can, dress in white, the Japanese color of mourning.
