On Thursday, December 18th, the New York City Council will vote on a resolution calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to sign the Jail & Prison Oversight bill. Join us on the City Hall steps at 9 am on Thursday, 12/18, ahead of the City Council vote to call for the passage of this resolution to demand that Gov. Hochul immediately sign this bill.
Jails and Prisons across New York are in crisis, and urgent action is needed. The brutal killings of Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi at Marcy and Mid-State prisons underscore the violence and abuse incarcerated people face in New York State's prison system. Jails in NYC are no better. Under the Adams administration, at least 47 people have died in NYC jails, and violence has skyrocketed. The oversight bill includes overhauling the failing government watchdog—the State Commission of Correction—with authority over local jails and state prisons, including Marcy, Mid-State, and Rikers
