Urge Your Senators: Do Not Trade Away the Right to Seek Safety

A bipartisan group of Senators is currently negotiating a one-time budget deal that would potentially trade away a permanent weakening of asylum law—placing the lives of countless people seeking safety at risk. The deal would also limit the use of parole, a lifesaving pathway that has allowed Ukrainians fleeing war and Afghan allies escaping the Taliban—among others—to find safe haven in the United States.

These changes would not only violate international law and betray America’s tradition of welcome—they are also dangerous and irresponsible. These measures will not stop people fleeing harm from coming to the U.S. border to seek safety. Congress cannot ignore the political and humanitarian realities globally that are increasing displacement. Gutting asylum protections and parole will merely make it more difficult to manage the border.

America’s history of providing refuge to people seeking safety should not be bartered away in a budget deal. We need your urgent help. Contact your Senators today, and urge them not to turn their backs on people fleeing harm and instead focus their attention on productive and humane solutions for the realities of our time.
