While many parts of the reconciliation budget bill that passed the House of Representatives would have devastating impacts on New York State, little attention has been paid to proposed cuts to the Essential Plan, which would have some of the most sweeping consequences, and there have been many misconceptions about the proposal circulating.
These proposed provisions would be particularly harmful to New York State because of how we structure Medicaid and Essential Plan funding. The proposed changes to the Essential Plan would cost New York over $10 billion and 200,000 jobs, and leave 250,000 New Yorkers without health insurance. All of this is before any of the other proposed cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other harmful provisions of the bill.
While the reconciliation bill has passed the House and is making its way to the Senate, there is still time to call for New York State to protect the Essential Plan and Medicaid. Please sign onto this letter from our partners at Fiscal Policy Institute, which will go to both Senate and House representatives.
The sign on deadline is Tuesday, 5/27 at 5 pm, however if the budget process is delayed, we will extend the deadline to allow for more sign-ons.
